VaultPress Now Open To Everyone

Not just for golden ticket holders anymore!

VaultPress launches service for all users

VaultPress is a backup service provided by Automattic, the creators of WordPress.com.  I was one of the fortunate few to receive a golden ticket which was a beta release for a limited amount of bloggers and website owners. What makes VaultPress enticing versus using a self managed backup solution? Well, think of it as a conciegre service for your blog or WordPress powered website. Not only do you have someone else worrying about the state of your backups, but you also have that support available to you when you need to restore after a hack or crisis.

Hacking is on the rise, and depending upon your needs it may be well worth the investment (starting at $15/mo) to use a service to automatically backup and monitor your blog or website from intruders. I don’t currently use VaultPress on ScatteredBlogger simply because, well, I only had one golden ticket and used it on my personal blog. The cost of entry starts at 15 smackers a month, but you get the following with that:

VaultPress Basic PlanMost website owners and bloggers I talk to about security, or disaster recovery don’t have an active plan. It’s one of those things that’s out of sight out of mind until fit hits the shan (yes I said “fit hits the shan”) and you are left scathing your head wondering how to recover from a website gone bad. WordPress in itself is pretty rock solid if you stay up to date on all your updates, however, remember that there are a lot of different ways intruders can intrude upon your personal web ponderosa. Most attacks happen via a MySQL or PHP injection vulnerability. They can happen lots of different ways so it’s important to at least have a plan in place to recover. Protecting your content from disaster is equally important as creating it in the first place.

Could you imagine having over 300 posts and then your website is hacked, defaced, deleted due to a hosting issue, or otherwise just lost int he wind due to some unforeseen event? That would suck, so why not have a backup plan in place?

Now, there are several different backup solutions out there that you don’t have to drop a lot of cheddar for. I will be covering these options over the next couple of weeks and talk about the pros and cons so you can save your time on the research, I’ll do my best to aggregate for you all.

Let me know if you have used VaultPress and what you think. Are you using another solution? Do you have a solution at all? Let me know in the comments!
