blogger’s handbook coming soon

So I put this video together pretty quicly and easily using Search Stories by Youtube. It’s pretty fun and I encourage you to make a fun video and let me know the link.

Essentially I’m going to be working hard over the enxt 8 weeks on putting together a series of articles which will help provide insight, direction and tutorials on how to start a blog, manage it, promote it and be inspired to updating it on a regular basis. I hope you find the upcoming articles helpful, and please let me know if you need additional help or assistance in the comments as I will do my best to help you out.

Hope you all are doing great, and I look forward to the upcoming series…

Cheers,

Josh

Customize admin dashboard in WordPress

Modifying the admin dashboard in WordPress is pretty easy. In the above video I demonstrate the initial dashboard after a fresh install of WordPress, and then how to modify the look of it. There isn’t really much to it. The “Screen Options” tab in the upper right hand side will initialize a dropdown when clicked. From there you can un-check which boxes you want displayed, and how many columns you want to use.

Google ‘real-time’ search

Google real-time search

Google 'real-time' search

Google is testing out a new real-time search engine which provides more “real-time” search results. Ths search engine scours the web monitoring tweets and other relevant keyword information and provides it to you in a scrolling update on the search query.

So far I’ve been using it for things like sports scores, monitoring trending topics and such, but part of me scratches my head and thinks, “why not just use http://search.twitter.com” instead of using google’s real time search?

For fun I went ahead and kicked off a search for “Seth Godin” since I knew he just posted an article this morning that I enjoyed titled “your famous” and I wanted to see if it had started indexing yet.

Below are the twitter search results for my query.

The Social Network Movie Review

A Geek’s Perspective on “the social network”

The Social Network Movie Review

Jesse Eisenberg - The Social Network

I went and watched “the social network” last night with my wife after a tasty meal at Copelands. I know there is a lot of hype around the movie simply because of the context of it being a backstabbing turn twister with some big name actors. I’ll tell you what turned me on to see it more than that simply boils down to two names: David Fincher & Aaron Sorkin. I’m a long time fan of The West Wing which for the first 4-5 seasons was written by Aaron Sorkin. There are two main ingredients necessary to deliver any movie or series that is worthy of gaining more than 7 stars. A superb screenwriter, and a magical director. If you have those two main ingredients you are well on your way to creating something that is captivating. Sure, the actors are a large piece of this magic potion, I agree but you can still manage to pull off a decent flick with even B or C list actors if you have the screenplay and director.

Attending WordCamp in Birmingham, AL. 2010

WordCamp – Birmingham

WordCamp Birmingham

I just wanted to post a quick not to let everyone know about an awesome event happening this coming weekend of September 18th, 2010 in Birmingham, Alabama. Wordcamp is an awesome WordPress conference that draws out people from all areas of development. Beginners, designers, developers and users come together to learn from speakers, exchange knowledge and ideas as well as socialize.

I will be heading out early Saturday morning from Atlanta. It’s not a bad drive. I believe I will be going with Danny Mustafic and staying through Sunday afternoon. I would definitely encourage anyone to go in the area who can make it. It is a really fun event that brings enthusiasts of this fantastic open source platform together. For some useful WordPress plugins that we use when developing sites on WordPress check out my blog article on “Useful and popular WordPress plugins” for some great tools to make your blog or website more extensive.

Here is a great interview “Inspirageek” did with Matt Mullenweg at the WordCamp – Birmingham December 19th, 2009.

If you plan on attending, hit me up on twitter!

The twitter hashtag for the even is #wcbhm10

Google: Don’t Be Evil

Hi,

According to news reports, Google is about to cut a deal with Verizon that would end the Internet as we know it by allowing giant corporations to control what websites are load quickly and easily on the Internet and dump everyone else onto an Internet slow lane.

I signed a petition urging Google to kill the deal with Verizon. Can you join me at the link below?

Social Experiment on ADA

I find myself looking at people who ride the carts at the grocery store more often than not with a confused look on my face as opposed to the normal everyday “Josh” dazed & confused look. The reason for this I believe is becuase I’m sizing up the individual driving the cart. Did they have a rollerblading accident and their ankle is hurt? Perhaps they have a fake leg and would rather cruise the aisles in their modified hover-round with the attached shopping cart? From my observations over the years as a professional Grocery Store Analyst (GSA), I usually come to the conclusion that people ride in these motorized grocery getters because they are either incredibly obese (fat) or just pure lazy.

Valve Releases Steam Client for Mac OS X

Steam Client for Mac OSX

So after lots of rumors and speculation, Valve has released a Steam client for Mac OS X. Is this going to change the pros and cons in the future when determining what OS platform to select? Perhaps, especially since the vibe online is that there is a Linux client destined to be released sometime at the end of summer according to Phoronix.

I went ahead and downloaded the dmg file and installed Portal which they are offering for free right now. BONUS!. I actually have played it and so far loving where this is going. After downloading and copying over the application I went ahead and logged in to see my Macbook Pro connect natively for the first time.

How To Create Custom Widget From a Web Clip (Pandora)

So there are those times you wish you could have a cool handy service on standby without logging into the website. Pandora is one of those services I use. I don’t use it often enough to pay for Pandora One although I am considering it just because I’d like to have more “skips”.

If you’ve ever wanted to have the “widget” feature without forking over the dough however, then watch the video I put together below for an example of how to make a custom widget. This process can also be used to really use any kind of web service and post it to your Mac OS X dashboard.
